The first batch of volunteers is with the officers and members of the Rotary Club of Greater Calbayog during the RCGC blood-letting-sponsored activity at St. Camillus Hospital on July 30, 2018.
CALBAYOG CITY – St. Camillus Hospital is recipient of a Blood-Letting Project sponsored by the Rotary Club of Greater Calbayog assisted by the Provincial Blood Services Team (PBST) of Samar Provincial Health Office (SPHO).
Thirty (30) volunteers participated in the blood-letting project of the Rotary Club of Greater Calbayog in partnership with the Provincial Blood Services Team of the Samar Provincial Health Office. The activity was conducted on July 30, 2018 at St. Camillus Hospital being recipient of the said project.
Donors composed of Philippine National Police (PNP) and 43rd Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army (PA) and Rotarians of Greater Calbayog. The project collected 30 (of 500 cc each) bags in blood supply for use of the patients of St. Camillus Hospital thus providing 18 O+, 9 A+ and 3 B+ bags of blood reserve for the hospital.
The team from the PBST is composed of Blood Program Physician Dr. Maila Navidad; Provincial Blood Coordinator Aris P. Dacaynos; 3 Medical Technologists Elvira T. De Loyola, Miey Kevin C. Gabutin & Hazel J. Tilles; 2 Registered Nurses Josienna T. Tizon & Joy Jasmen Menion; and 2 other staff Crisanto Urbano and Louie Mabilangan.

Blood Program Physician Navidad shared appreciation about the efforts made by Calbayognons in providing blood supply to hospitals in the city, having conducted two blood-letting activities in three-days span while PBST Team performs its counterpart in screening, assessment and seeing to it that the donors are well after blood collection. She further shared the information about the tool they use in assessing and/or qualifying a volunteer-donor.
“We have a checklist used as mechanism to qualify a donor as physically fit as well as ensure that the blood collected is safe,” Dr. Navidad said and further added that “the donor is made aware that the blood collected will be tested for blood type, hemoglobin, Malaria, Syphillis, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV.”
Provincial Blood Coordinator Dacaynos, told Calbayog Journal, that hospitals are required to have four (4) blood-letting activities in a year (which may be done every after three months) as one of the qualifications for the issuance of a license to operate. Local Government Units (LGU’s) as well are mandated that at least one percent (1%) of respective population donate blood.

“One of the requirements for a hospital to continue to operate, for renewal of licenses, is the conduct of at least 4 blood-letting activities in one year and the lack of it will be reason enough for the office of the Provincial Blood Coordinator to not sign application for renewal or continued operation of private hospitals in the province,” Dacaynos conveyed.
Dacaynos continued to emphasize that, “Republic Act 7719, otherwise known as the Blood Act of 1994 instructs local government units that 1% of its population will be required to donate blood.”
The Provincial Blood Services Team, under the programs of the Provincial Government, have been around municipalities and two cities of Samar Province implementing blood-letting programs in partnership with Red Cross and respective community sponsors.
