CHURCH LEADERS MARK YOLANDA ANNIVERSARY WITH MESSAGE OF HOPE AND SOLIDARITY
Catbalogan City, Samar — As the nation observes the 12th anniversary of Supertyphoon Yolanda (Haiyan), the Diocese of Borongan called on the faithful to honor the lives lost and renew their commitment to caring for the environment and one another.

In a statement released Friday, Fr. James B. Abella, Executive Director of Caritas Borongan, together with Most Rev. Crispin B. Varquez, DD, Bishop of Borongan, led prayers for the victims of both natural and man-made disasters. The Church also extended sympathy to those recently affected by Typhoon Tino, including residents of Suluan Island, Homonhon Island, Cebu, San Carlos, and Dumaguete.

?“As we commemorate the 12th year since Supertyphoon Yolanda, we pause in prayer for the departed victims... and reflect on the profound gift of Creation entrusted to us, and our responsibility to protect it,” the statement read.

The Diocese recognized the resilience and unity of communities that continue to rise from the aftermath of calamities.

In their trials, we witnessed faith, solidarity, and communal care,” the message added. “May their healing be strengthened by wiser land use, robust disaster preparedness, and faithful stewardship of our natural resources.”

?“May our parishes and homes be sanctuaries of care for creation and neighbor,” the Church message continued. “May Mother Mary, our patroness, keep us all safe under the mantle of her maternal protection.” ? ?Twelve years after one of the world’s strongest storms made landfall, the Diocese’s message goes beyond remembrance—it’s a reminder that unity and care for creation are the best defenses against future tragedies. In a world still shaped by disaster and recovery, the Church’s call for faith, compassion, and responsible stewardship remains as vital as ever.(CJ/jmm/DMJ)
