Calbayog City is placed under a State of Calamity following the impacts of Typhoon Kristine in the city.
Vice Mayor Rex Daguman, in his capacity as Acting City Mayor, requested for a Special Session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, following the Resolution of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDDRMC) recommending to place the city under a State of Calamity.
The recommendation was based on an initial (partial) report, as of October 23, 2024 that 9,307 families of 7,751 households in 58 (out of 157) barangays (villages) of the city were affected by the onslaught of Typhoon Kristine. The numbers exceed 15%
of the population affected by the extreme weather occurrence allowable by law in the declaration of a state of calamity.
Residents along coastal areas needed to be evacuated to centers for safety. Turbulent sea waters with increased wave heights as triggered by intensified winds of Typhoon Kristine posed danger to the lives of people along the shorelines.
“I have to bring my family - wife and 3 children - to the evacuation center assigned to us to ensure that they are kept dry and safe while I check on our house from time to time,” says Teody, a pedicab driver whose nipa hut stands along the shorelines of Barangay Capoocan, Calbayog City.
The rise of flood water in most of the 58 communities (herein reported) damaged properties, destroyed classrooms and ruined business stalls. Households and families in private dwellings needed to seek refuge to emergency shelters.
