MONKEYPOX or MPox (Clade II) case is confirmed in Sogod, Southern Leyte. It is the first MPox case in Eastern Visayas.

The patient is 28 years old and resident of Barangay Zone 2, Sogod Southern Leyte, who, according to the Municipal Health Office, manifested symptoms in the late part of May 2025 but was found to have no travel history.

Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Isabelita Mato informed that it took about 2 weeks until the confirmatory results were released as the swab samples needed to be submitted to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). Only the RITM issues official confirmatory results.

ogod Municipal Mayor Sheferred Lino Tan, in a video statement said that the public need not panic. He asked for the public to instead support and cooperate with health workers.

The Mayor assured that the local government will organize a task force that will lead in the fight against the spread of the MPox virus.

Sogod RHU Doctor Majorette Mosot said that the patient was isolated immediately after having found to manifest symptoms of the virus. Contact tracing was conducted right away and family members were closely monitored, a report said.

Further, the LGU-RHU stated that the patient has already recovered with symptoms ably managed during the immediate isolation.

Meanwhile, Provincial Health Officer, Feliciano John Matibag informed that funds were already set aside during a meeting held last week. The fund. The funds will be used in programs to control the spread of the mpox virus.

Dr. Matibag assured that the provincial government has prepared medicines while surveilance will be activated in the entire province particularly in the municipality of Sogod.
