ORMOC CITY – Ormoc City Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez filed a petition asking the Commission on Elections to suspend the proclamation of former Court of Appeals Justice Vicente “Ching” Veloso, in case he wins, three days ahead of the polls. Gomez filed the petition for a “precautionary motion to suspend proclamation” on May 9 against Veloso, who is challenging her husband Rep. Richard Gomez for Congressman of Leyte’s furth congressional district.
To recall, Gomez filed a disqualification case against Veloso last May 8 for alleged violation of the omnibus election code. In her petition, Gomez cited Section 27 of the Omnibus Election Code that prioritizes disqualification cases and that decisions of the Comelec should be rendered not later than seven days before the election.
“Considering that there are only three days left before the elections and the Petition for Disqualification is still pending before this Honorable Commission, Petitioner respectfully moves for the suspension of the proclamation of Respondent in the remote possibility that he receives the highest number of votes for the position of Representative of the Fourth District of Leyte in the 12 May 2025 National and Local Elections,” her petition states.
In her May 8 petition to disqualify Veloso, Gomez cited a Facebook post wherein Veloso allegedly uttered threatening statement. Veloso allegedly said, “This is what they need to remember, because I am just putting the devil to sleep inside my body. Before, I used to go to mass daily. But don’t make any effort to awaken the devil, and if the need arises for me to kill, I will kill.”
Meanwhile, Veloso said this petition to stop his proclamation is a desperate attempt to stop him from assuming office amid Richard’s impending defeat in the polls.
“This is an admission that Richard will lose in the election and they are afraid to face the truth,” Veloso said.
Veloso said the statements were uttered in November 8, 2024 which is way back before the election period even when the candidates already filed their certificate of candidacy at that time.
“How can it be an election offense when election period has not even started?” Veloso said. Veloso said the case filed against him is a simple harassment in the face of her husband’s defeat in the polls.(CJ/jmm/ER)
