CATARMAN, Northern Samar – The Department of Public Works and Highways will implement P2.74 billion worth of roads and infrastructure projects in the first district of Northern Samar this year.

Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan expressed his gratitude to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for approving the significant budget allocation under the 2024 National Expenditure Program as this will help the province cope with the recent natural calamities.

"I thank our president for keeping with his promise to implement more infrastructure projects in our province," Ongchuan said.

ngchuan said there is a need to expand roads in Northern Samar's first district being the gateway in the Visayas for travelers from Luzon who are going to Mindanao. He said this is vital in the economy of the country as the transport of goods passes through this area.

He added that the recent shearline and heavy rains in the province damaged crops and houses that emphasized the need for additional flood controls and other vital infrastructures.

The 2024 NEP identified 77 projects for implementation by the DPWH in Northern Samar's first district including 25 projects under the National Road Network Services, 3 under the Flood Management Services, one under the local program, and 48 under the Basic Infrastructure program.

District Engineer Alvin Ignacio of the DPWH First District Engineering office in Northern Samar said the major projects for implementation are the preventive maintenance of the Catarman-Calbayog Road which was allotted P85 million, and the construction of the San Isidro-Lope De Vega Road with an allocation of P100 million.

Ignacio said 34 projects were bid out already in January 2024 while 40 projects are under preliminary detailed engineering.

Ongchuan also acknowledged the Northern Samar First District Rep. Paul Daza, for facilitating national government support to infrastructure development in Northern Samar which will enhance connectivity and certainly contribute to building resiliency and the overall economic development of the province.

Northern Samar is among the first provinces that Pres. Marcos visited after he took office when he led the inauguration of the Korean funded Samar Pacific Coastal Road (SPCR) project.

During the inauguration, Marcos gave assurance that his administration will continue to support projects in the province to alleviate poverty, promote good governance, secure the health and well-being of the citizenry, and usher inclusive development in the province.(CJ/jmm/ER)
