Borongan City Airport in Eastern Samar gets Php200 million from the country's 2024 capital outlay for the upgrade of its aviation infrastructure.

"The amount of Php200 million is earmarked in the 2024 General Apporiations Law to build up the infrastructure of Borongan City Airport," House of Representative Minority Leader and 4Ps Representative Marcelino Libanan said on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.

The airport serves Eastern Samar province and the coastal capital city of Borongan which is a popular surfing spot.
"Our goal is to increase the airport's capacity to accommodate more commercial flights," Libanan said.

Early in 2023, the country's flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL) started a twice-weekly Cebu-Borongan-Cebu flights Borongan City more accessible to travelers from all over the country.

"The airport's improvement will enhance the transfer of people and goods and help bring in more tourists as we look forward to other airlines operating in and out of Borongan City," Libanan added.

The airport is currently undergoing a 200-meter extension of 1.3 kilometer runway.

With the efforts of the city government of Borongan, led by Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agad, in aggressively promoting sports tourism, Libanan looks forward of the city becoming the surfing capital of Visayas.

Over 150 competitors from accross the Philippines recently participated in the Surf City Borongan Masters from November 24 to December 1, 2023, followed by the Second National Surf Summit from December 2-4.

Libanan hails from the Municipality of Oras, Eastern Samar and represented the province's lone congressional district for three consecutive terms before his election as 4Ps party list representative in 2022 and Minority Leader of the 19th Congress.(CJ/JMM)
