TACLOBAN CITY – A private company entered into a venture with the provincial government of Northern Samar to construct at least 100 telecommunication towers all over the province that will boost mobile signals and connectivity even in remote communities.
On Wednesday, 24 January, Northern Samar Gov. Edwin Ongchuan met with officials of Phil-Tower Consortium Inc.
(PhilTower), a renowned digital shared infrastructure provider, for the construction of a minimum of 100 towers in the province that will serve as co-location sites for multiple mobile operators.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) has adopted a "common tower policy" approach that allows multiple telecommunications (telco) networks to use the same towers resulting in faster rollout and cheaper services to the public.
Kalvin Laurence Antonio B. Parpan, Director for External Affairs of PhilTower, said the CTP approach ensures more efficient and accessible services for a larger number of people and mitigates the proliferation of unsightly towers, thus harmonizing the country's landscape.
Parpan said PhilTower has already built an impressive portfolio of towers throughout North and South Luzon and made notable strides in the National Capital Region. These towers range from 30 to 50 meters in height, encompassing ground-based, rooftop, and street furniture microcell pole solutions, which blend seamlessly into residential areas and minimize physical footprint.

"We eagerly anticipate hosting mobile operators such as Smart, Globe, and Dito on our sites, as well as broadband providers seeking accelerated and cost-effective network expansion," Parpan said.
Governor Edwin Ongchuan expressed gratitude to PhilTower for considering an investment in Northern Samar and acknowledged the invaluable assistance of the Board of Investments in facilitating the venture.
In March, this year, a team from PhilTower will conduct an ocular inspection in the province, collaborating with Local Planning and Development Coordinators to identify suitable tower locations aligning with land use plans.
Parpan said Philtower is embarking on an ambitious project to construct 8,023 tailor-made towers in underserved and unserved locations across the Philippines.
He said these digital infrastructures in rural areas will improve telecommunications services, create better livelihood opportunities, enhance access to government online services, and contribute to poverty eradication, ultimately addressing the root causes of insurgency in the country.
He added that the company will create and operate these infrastructures at no cost to the Local Government Units (LGUs), making them an asset for the LGUs to deliver world-class telecommunications networks with organized outdoor and indoor wireless coverage. The facilities will maintain a standardized appearance, facilitating the accommodation of multiple operators and avoiding visual clutter.(CJ/jmm/ER)
